What could be seen, and from where
Many cases turn on a simple question: what could a person see from a specific vantage point at a specific time? Photographs and site visits often cannot convey the geometry involved. JP Forensics answers the question with measured 3D models, ray tracing, and terrain analysis, so sightlines are tested against the scene rather than described from memory.
How the analysis is built
The site is documented with laser scanning and photogrammetry and registered to surveyed control. Visibility is then modeled from defined positions and eye heights, and lines of sight are checked for obstructions from vegetation, structures, vehicles, and terrain. Time-of-day and lighting conditions are considered where they matter. Spatial resection and reverse camera projection tie witness and surveillance imagery to the same framework, and surveillance video can be synchronized and correlated with the 3D model.
Key deliverables
- 3D ray-tracing visibility modeling
- Viewshed mapping from multiple points
- Line-of-sight obstruction analysis
- Time-of-day and lighting considerations
- Interactive exhibits and still frames comparing obstructed and clear sightlines
- Court-ready visual deliverables
The work is documented the way it will be examined: terms defined, control first, field then office, methods before products, and opinions tied to labeled exhibits.
Matters supported
Visibility and line-of-sight analysis supports officer-involved and use-of-force incidents, wrongful death and catastrophic injury, premises liability, accident reconstruction, and wildfire matters where what a witness or camera could see is at issue.
Senior-level attention on every matter
The work is led by Joel Panock, LSIT, MSEE, Principal of JP Forensics. Joel has over 22 years of experience in mapping, surveying, LiDAR, UAV data capture, and 3D modeling, and 14+ years of forensic experience and litigation support. He holds an M.S. in Electrical & Computer Engineering from UC Irvine, is a California Land Surveyor-in-Training (LSIT #8695), and is an FAA Part 107 Remote Pilot. JP Forensics is deliberately small, so the person who reviews your matter is the person who does the work.
